The Indie Journey

As you can see I’ve been busy writing more than blogging or promoing, but I’m a writer, not a blogger or promoter at heart. But since there are so many new authors delving into the Indie publishing venture, or considering it, I thought it might be helpful to add one more voice to the blogs sharing the journey.

I’ve been published for two years now as Ari Thatcher through Ellora’s Cave, and am pretty happy with my sales there, all things considered. Four months ago I self-published short erotica under another name and I’ve been turning cartwheels over those numbers.

Next week I will release my first two novellas under my own name, to be followed by at least four Regency shorts by the end of the year. Since those are the first books released as Aileen Fish, I decided this is the perfect time to begin journaling the experience. None of the books are erotic, and erotica and erotic romance are considered the better selling genres. Yet I know plenty of non-erotic romance writers doing quite well in Kindle sales. I really believe good books sell no matter the genre. It might take time for readers to find them, but they will, eventually.

I plan to share monthly sales numbers across my three author names, as Ari will self-pub some erotic romance, too. We can assume my writing/editing/formatting/covers will be equal, although I’ll be making revisions if needed. I’ll document promo done for one name or another and resulting jumps in sales, if any. I don’t promote the short erotica, and really hate promo period, so there won’t be a lot done after the first few books are released.

So you know where I get my crazy ideas, I am following the blogs of Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Katherine Rusch to the point of distraction (major squirrelage and popcorn kittens going on here!) and might send you their way to clarify a point.

The main points in my business plan are harped on by DWS: sales grow proportionally with the number of books available, don’t check the sales numbers daily and don’t mess with pricing. I do plan to mess with his price-messing rule at the start though, but I’ll get into that with the next post.

In the meantime, status quo:
